Sport

Sombor is a town with a long sports tradition. For the purposes of highly developed sport, Sombor Sport Club was established in 1887.

At the end of the nineteenth century young athletes in Sombor were highly regarded in swimming and water polo, as well as in the athletics sphere with numerous National titles. Significant sports results were achieved by the first Olympic competitors from Sombor - wrestlers: Steve Pišta Nađ and Nikola Grbic in Paris in 1924, and later Ivan Frgić in Montreal in 1976. After World War II the Olympic medal collection increased, on behalf of weight lifters and players of handball.

Athletes in Sombor have the opportunity of high-quality preparations as well as the organization of sports competitions on numerous sports grounds and regulated facilities.

Sokolski dom (Boarding home of "Soko")

The construction of the "Sokolski dom" began in 1926 and was completed the following year. The building was built in Byzantine style. At the time the boarding home of Soko was built, it was one of the most beautiful buildings in Sombor, and one of the first Soko homes in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The facility of the Sokolski dom, offers athletes:
  • A sports hall (22 m x 13 m)
  • Concrete outdoor courts for basketball, handball and volleyball
  • An open field for football with artificial grass

City Hall "Mostonga"

City Hall "Mostonga" was built in 1971 and is used for training and competition, physical education, the implementation of recreational programs, maintenance of cultural, entertainment and business events. The facility is designed and constructed as a sports hall for indoor sports, and consists of:
  • The main hall measuring 43x50 m, which meets the requirements for all types of competition in the small sports at a federal and international level
  • A second hall measuring 28x18 m

Right near the Hall there is a jogging track.

Within the building there is a clinic and sports physician, and is available to all athletes.

Swimming pool "Mostonga"

The pool was built in 1981and has become a very popular school for non-swimmers. The building offers athletes:
  • Large indoor swimming pool 25m x 17.5m x 2 m
  • Small indoor swimming pool 8m x 17.5m x 0.80 m
  • An outdoor swimming pool measuring 50m x 25m
  • 2 outdoor children pools about 4m x 4m

The public swimming area "Strand" on the channel

The construction of the Grand Canal was in the eighteenth century and Sombor received its first swimming area. During the 30s of that century, the Strand was built on the left side of the Apatin Bridge, where it remains today. Today, the public beach is composed of:
  • An outdoor swimming pool measuring 50m x 25m
  • Large outdoor swimming pool 25m x 8m
  • Courts for beach volleyball
  • Fields for football
  • A playground

City Stadium

The City Stadium has three football fields: one main, around which there is an athletics track and two additional football fields.

Tenni courts


The first tennis court in Sombor was built in 1895, on the location of TK "ŽAK." Three more tennis courts were built by 1905. The best-known player at that time was Ivan Radovic, Yugoslavia Davis Cup player. Today there are a number of locations with tennis courts.

Riding school „Magnifico“

Riding school "Magnifico" can offer training through the sport school as well as recreational riding, and for advanced riders, riding in the district of Sombor and its surroundings, as well as trips on horseback. The school organizes various photo-shootings as well as various photo-shootings of horses and riders, as well as presentations of the horses. Currently, the riding school has over one hundred members, most of them are children aged 10-18 years. In the spring the school plans to begin to work on school educational and therapeutic riding. Riding school "Magnifico" is run by Slobodan Lazic, accredited trainer, instructor and judge in the equestrian sport.
